The story of artificial grass goes back more than 50 years. Since the first attempt at creating a synthetic turf surface, artificial grass technology has changed dramatically. Perhaps the most significant advancements have been in the techniques for creating radical new varieties of synthetic grass yarn.

Like modern carpet fibers that have incredible texture, durability and resistance to stains, textile technology has helped Purchase Green create some amazing yarns for artificial grass. Here at Purchase Green, our favorite thing to do is help educate our customers so they get the right grass to suit their specific needs. As such, we decided to post a blog series covering the various yarn types used in Purchase Green products.

In Part 1 of our synthetic grass yarn series, Part 2 and Part 3, we introduced you to the Flat, Stem and V-shape yarn, respectively. This time we take a look at the C-shape. The C-shape is among the newest and most innovative yarns we manufacture. It is used in our Eco Family of artificial grass.

The C-Shape

We introduced the C-shape fiber when we launched our Eco Line in June of 2015. We’re really excited about the C-shape because it turns out the C has many amazing properties. Perhaps the most amazing is the fact that the “C” shaped fiber helps to reduce the surface temperature of the grass by diverting ultraviolet rays from the shorter curled fibers where heat can be trapped. As a result, our grasses with C-shaped fibers show 10 to 20 degree improvement in temperature, making it an exceptional choice for those looking for a cooler grass that can handle moderate traffic. And it’s why the Eco Family grasses all feature our Cool Yarn technology.

The C-shape yields a tall, thin fescue-like quality that results in very good realism and solid performance. It’s a bit shinier than other grasses though, and isn’t the softest grass we offer. But it does many things well and is a good choice for those looking for a grass that looks real, stays cooler and offers admirable durability.

The C-shape is another Tencate fiber. Tencate is known for being one of the best yarn extruders in the world and this is another one of the products that helps give them that reputation. So why choose C-shape?

Our C-shape grasses yield beautiful color. Whether it’s a robust, dark olive you seek or a lighter, springtime look, the C-shape fibers offer two distinct yet beautiful shades of green. Both colors present a grass that is at the peak of its fullness and health.

The design of the C-shape is primarily due to customers asking us for a realistic-looking grass that was both durable and, most importantly, cooler to the touch. The shape really does make a difference. Instead of a flat surface that gets battered by heat, the C-shape naturally reflects more heat away.

Interestingly, the same curvaceous property that keeps the C-shape from getting as warm as other grasses also helps its resiliency. Nature knows best and the C-shape, when you think about it, is really an arch. The arch, as you know if you’ve ever been to ancient Rome, is so durable and strong that it is often the only thing still standing after two thousand years. And in Utah, nature’s own arches have been standing for millions of years – a testament to the power of the C-shape!
