Artificial grass is helping volunteers at the Pomona Fairplex Garden Railroad with one of the more labor-intensive aspects of maintaining the historic attraction — mowing the lawn.

This year, the Fairplex Garden Railroad, which opened in 1924, features more than 10,000 feet of operating track, double the number from 20 years ago, according to the volunteer organization that manages the attraction. The various trains and trolleys travel through scenes depicting California history from the 1850s to present day and wander through the mountains, over lakes and streams and through gardens, according to the organization.
