Nevada Water Smart Landscape Conversion Artificial Grass Rebates

You can hire a Contractor or take on the project Yourself, but have you considered taking advantage of the Southern Nevada Water Authority Rebate? This applies to businesses, HOAs and multifamily properties for grass removed and replaced with desert landscaping.

Why Does Nevada Water Smart Program Matter?

The water smart program is a community effort to preserve Southern Nevada’s water supply. With a water shortage declared on the Colorado River and Lake Mead’s levels at historic lows, it’s crucial to evaluate water usage in the Las Vegas area.

According to the Southern Nevada Water Authority, the biggest use of our community’s water supply is outdoor landscape watering. An important measure has already been taken to replace useless grass with the AB356 law, prohibiting the use of precious Colorado River water to irrigate nonfunctional grass in commercial, multi-family, and government properties beginning in 2027.

I’m a Business Owner. What Am I Supposed to Do with All This Grass?

With a looming deadline to remove useless grass or face legal consequences, business owners and property management companies are looking for cost-effective solutions to “The Grass Problem.” To help offset the costs of replacing grass, the Southern Nevada Water Authority is offering a rebate program for business, HOA, and multi-family properties.

The Water Smart Landscapes rebate gives $3 per square foot of grass removed and replaced with desert landscaping up to the first 10,000 square feet converted, and $1.50 per square foot thereafter per property. Time is running out for the $3 per square foot rebate, as the rebate drops to $2 per square foot starting January 1, 2025.

What may seem like a hefty project to transform nonfunctional grass into a water smart landscape, is in fact a great investment into the area. It’s all good business sense: a projected savings of 825,000 gallons of water for a 15,000 square foot conversion, reduced repair costs for water and sprinkler damage, reduced pests and pest-control costs, and decreased risk of water waste fees.

I’m a Homeowner. I Can Keep My Grass, So Why Shouldn’t I?

Aside from the importance of conserving our vital water resources, transforming your lawn into a smart landscape brings a ton of benefits. Lower water usage can mean lower bills for your family, as well as decreased risk of water waste fees. And less maintenance means more time to enjoy your new outdoor space. Homeowners also benefit from a water rebate from the Southern Nevada Water Authority. Replacing your lawn with desert landscaping can qualify you for a $5 per square foot rebate, up to the first 10,000 square feet converted, and $3.50 per square foot thereafter per property.

This Water Smart Landscape rebate is only for a limited time; the application deadline has been extended until December 31, 2024, and projects must be completed by the end of 2025.

How Do I Get the Rebate?

The first thing you should do is check your eligibility for this rebate. Program conditions for residential and commercial properties can be found at the Southern Nevada Water Authority website. Next, you’ll want to plan what your smart landscape project will look like. If you want the recreational use of your lawn or the look of a green manicured yard, artificial turf is a great alternative – and it’s in compliance with the rebate.

Purchase Green North Las Vegas is a part of the Water Smart Landscaper program. To have qualified for the program, we completed at least 6 hours of Southern Nevada Water Authority water-efficiency training, maintain good standing with the Nevada State Contractors Board, and are licensed and insured. We are happy to help plan and execute your grass conversion project and stay within the parameters of the rebate program – whether it’s a residential or commercial project.

After planning your project, it’s time to apply for the rebate. Visit the SNWA website to apply for the residential or business rebate. Once the application is completed, there will be a site visit with the SNWA for final approval. Removing your lawn without SNWA approval will make the landscape conversion ineligible for the rebate.

After you get approved, it’s go time! Removing sod, installing new artificial grass, hardscaping, and planting drought-resistant native vegetation are all ways your project could transform your outdoor space.

Once your project is completed, submit the final documentation to SNWA. These documents may include invoices and photographs that verify to SNWA that your project was completed to the previously approved parameters. Once everything is verified, you’ll receive your rebate, and your project cost should be significantly offset!

Plant Coverage Exemption with Artificial Turf

If you are installing artificial turf as a rebate conversion project, existing plants outside of the lawn conversion area can be used to meet the 50 percent canopy coverage requirement. If you would like to qualify, the entire landscape area (where the lawn conversion takes place) must meet the program conditions for plant coverage, irrigation, mulch and weed barriers in both the front and backyard.

Why Choose Artificial Grass Over Your Preexisting Lawn?

They will accept artificial turf as a substitute for mulch (instead of rock or bark). However, it must be permeable (allowing air and water to pass freely) and all other program conditions must be met, including the 50 percent plant coverage requirement, low-flow irrigation, etc.

Artificial grass is an investment; it provides a means of saving money on landscaping and is a drought-conscious alternative to traditional lawns. Artificial turf also helps reduce the need for pesticides and fertilizers. Concerns regarding the potential toxicity of artificial turf and its properties have led to various studies. To date, no evidence has been reported that surface materials, yarns, infill, and backing are harmful to humans and pets under normal use conditions. Lastly, artificial grass can transform your landscape in a matter of days.
