Introducing Our Newest Product Line: Natural Fusion

We are so excited to announce our Natural Fusion line of artificial grasses! This family has four grasses that each have their own awesome qualities. They are

Let’s break them down!

Natural Fusion Olive & Natural Fusion Spring

Natural Fusion Olive and Spring are very similar but have a few key differences. They both come in 13.1′ wide rolls, have a 67oz face weight, a 1.8″ pile height, a double layer primary backing, and a polyurethane secondary backing. That polyurethane secondary backing is going to be more pliable, it’s going to be easier to cut, and it’s going to be more practical than other secondary backing systems in colder weather climates. Other secondary backings are going to be more rigid.

The main differences between the two are their blades, colors, and construction.

Natural Fusion Olive has three different colors that give it a more natural look, and Natural Fusion Spring has four colors.

Natural Fusion Olive is constructed with two blade shapes – W and Diamond – while Natural Fusion Spring has three blade shapes – S, V and Diamond. That extra blade shape in Natural Fusion Spring is going to help increase durability and memory while also giving that extra color for a more realistic look.

Natural Fusion Spring is also going to be more durable due to being made of C8 copolymers as opposed to Olive’s C4 copolymers.

Natural Fusion 50 & Natural Fusion 80

Natural Fusion 50 and 80 also have the double layer primary backing with the polyurethane secondary backing, and they come in 15′ wide rolls. They both have three blade shapes – S, M, and Diamond – that give both of these grasses four different colors. And like the Natural Fusion Spring, they are both made with C8 copolymers.

As you can probably tell from the name, these two grasses vary in their face weight. Natural Fusion 50 has a 50oz face weight while Natural Fusion 80 has an 80oz face weight. How do these differences in face weight come about? Natural Fusion 50 has a lower face weight because it has a wider 1/2″ gauge and a shorter 1.5″ pile height. Natural Fusion 80 has a higher face weight because of its narrower 3/8″ gauge and taller 1.9″ pile height.

What is that difference in face weight going to mean? In terms of aesthetics and function, denser grasses can appear more natural, and they tend to have better memory. With the less dense, shorter grass, you have a more ideal situation for pet owners. The shorter pile height and wider gauge are going to help with mitigating those pet odors that can get caught up in the fibers, and it’s going to reduce the appearance of matting patterns with whatever traffic will be on the grass.

Each of these grasses will have a recommended activity level of low to moderate traffic, and they’re all going to be great for landscape, pet, and playground applications.

If you have any questions about Natural Fusion, feel free to reach out to your local Purchase Green store, or live chat with an artificial grass expert on our website. And you can also check out the product pages for each of the products for a full breakdown.

How to Prevent and Treat Artificial Grass Pet Odors

It’s not uncommon for pet owners to come into one of our stores or call us and ask why their artificial grass has a bad smell. Oftentimes, they bought from another company or DIY’ed and were not made aware of important odor prevention and treatment practices.

By the time customers make a purchase, we want to empower them to be artificial grass experts. That’s why we have our Knowledge Base, YouTube videos, and this blog page – not to mention an entire team of artificial grass nerds working here.

To tackle the question of how to keep an artificial grass lawn stink-free, there are a couple of solutions. But why does it start to stink in the first place? Well, when a pet uses an artificial grass area to do their business, as it’s draining through the grass and backing, ammonia from urine can get trapped and build up over time. That’s what the unpleasant odor is. But have no fear, there are a few ways to prevent and treat this!

Choosing the Right Infill

Before the artificial grass is even in the yard, you can be sure to choose an infill that has been specifically designed for pet applications. We recommend HeroFill, as it is infused with anti-fungal protection and controls odors caused by mildew, mold, fungus, and algae. And it’s anti-microbial to significantly reduce the odor caused by ammonia buildup in pet urine and inhibit bacterial growth.

Another option is the Zeodorizer Turf Infill that is specifically designed for pet applications and also helps to reduce that ammonia smell by absorbing liquids and gases like a magnet, preventing the ammonia from forming a gas. It holds the ammonia until the sodium ions in rainwater release the magnetic ability, which forces the odor-causing bacteria into the ground – ultimately “flushing out” the ammonia smell.

Regular Cleaning

Once you have the right infill, a simple way to keep your turf fresh is to simply give it a light rinse every week or so, depending on how many pets use the area. The more or the bigger pets you have, the more you want to rinse your turf. Because your infill works to flush out that bad ammonia smell, giving it a little rinse will help that trapped ammonia work its way out of your turf and into the ground, where it won’t have to be heard from (or smelled) ever again. For more info on giving your lawn a good cleaning, check out this blog post.

Turf Bomb

For excellent prevention and treatment of pet odors, use Turf Bomb. This is in addition to those weekly or biweekly rinses. You’ll want to use Turf Bomb as a periodic deep cleaning agent. It’s non-toxic, hypo-allergenic, biodegradable, and safe for kids and pets. It was also specifically designed for cleaning puppy pads, so trust us when we say, this stuff works. Here’s what our customers have to say:

Simply attach your garden hose to the special “hook & hose” sprayer that is included with the 32oz bottle and rinse that ammonia and bacteria away.

And with those three tips, you won’t have to deal with artificial grass pet odors. So, if you haven’t invested in an artificial grass lawn for your pets yet, now you know the steps to take to keep it smelling fresh. And if you’re looking for solutions to treat a smelly lawn, we can’t recommend Turf Bomb enough.

If you have any questions about cleaning practices and the best products for you, reach out to your local Purchase Green store, use that live chat function on the side of your screen to talk to a real artificial grass expert, or call us at 844-TURF-444. We’re always happy to help!

What are our GrassTex artificial grasses?

As you search the Purchase Green shop page, you may come across a category called “GrassTex.” We get a lot of questions about what GrassTex is, so we’re going to tell you all about it!

GrassTex is our line of 100% USA Made grasses. They’re crafted right here in the USA, in the small town of Dalton, GA, best known for being the “carpet capital of the world.”

Our Grasstex line includes the following grasses: Eco Spring and Olive (in all face weights), VMAX, PG Tour, Playtime, Pet Heaven, and Soft Landing.

So what makes these grasses special? You know, besides them being our most patriotic grasses. Well for one, they include the unique backing innovations of Silverback and ArmorLoc.

ArmorLoc 3L is a non-directional, dimensionally stable primary backing that ensures no excess movement. It results in unmatched strength, no absorption, and improved dimensional stability.

Silverback is a secondary backing system that uses chemical bonds (rather than traditional mechanical bonds) to achieve a tuft bind that is 88% stronger than the industry norm.

Other features that appear in some of our GrassTex products are Cool Yarn for up to 20% cooler grass temperatures, foam backings for increased safety, and nylon fibers for heat resistance.

Our merger with Controlled Products has made US-made artificial grass lines like this possible, and we’re so glad to be able to offer our customers an awesome array of American grasses.

New Year’s Eve at Purchase Green | 2020 in Review

It goes without saying that this year was… different. Like everyone else, we started off this year with big plans. But plans get turned on their head, and you learn to roll with the punches. Our 2020 didn’t go the way we anticipated, and we’re okay with that. Despite a pandemic and some working from home, we managed to get a lot done!

We wanted to reflect on this year and go back to the New Year’s blog we wrote last year, just to see how things have changed.

2019 to 2020

At this time last year, we were excited to join forces with Controlled Products, LLC., an artificial grass manufacturer based in Dalton, Georgia. This year, our teams’ synergy has been incredible. We’ve been able to collaborate on a variety of endeavors and projects, and we’re super grateful for it.

In our end-of-2019 blog, we also introduced you to the Office of Business Management; we’re the ones who post these blogs (in addition to a TON of other initiatives). We predicted we’d have a lot to do in 2020, and boy, were we right. Our blog said, “Right now, we’re just four people in a room.” Between a couple of new hires and some remote work, we can tell you that that definitely changed. But we are looking forward to what 2021 will bring. We have big plans!

2020 – What a year!

Our company experienced tremendous, unanticipated growth this year, and we couldn’t be more grateful for everyone here at Purchase Green who showed up and did an amazing job. You are all truly essential, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

We also want to extend a special welcome to the new stores we opened this year. First, our Southern Colorado location in Castle Rock, CO. Jim, Ryan, and all the folks over there have put a lot into their store, and we are happy to have them be apart of the PG family. Just in the past month, we’ve opened two more locations. We opened our Camarillo, CA location at the end of November and our Houston, TX location earlier this month.

We have a lot of store openings planned for 2021; some of them are in states we’ve never been in before! That’s right – new year, new stores, new states. As the opening dates creep closer, we’ll keep you informed on the who, what, where of those new locations.

And to finish off our “Purchase Green 2020 Wrapped,” we want to thank all of our contractors, dealers, and DIY’ers who continue to support us. We know the year has not been easy, and we sincerely thank you for your loyalty and for your business.

That’s it from us for 2020. Have a safe and happy New Year, and we’ll see you in 2021!

Wishing You a Merry Christmas

We’ve been decked out in holiday decor and festive outfits for the past few weeks now, and we are so excited for it to finally be Christmas! Last week, Purchase Green had a company-wide employee training, and boy was it FESTIVE. In each little Zoom box, employees were dressed to the nines – the nines being some of the wackiest Christmas sweaters you’ve ever seen. One special Sales & Service Support Center employee sported a full-on Christmas tree costume (see the video below to know who I’m talking about.) There were reindeer antlers and elf ears galore as the team discussed our 2020 in review and our plans for 2021.

Getting in on the holiday spirit was an awesome way for our team members to feel like we’re celebrating together, even though we’re all spread out. Hopefully, that same festive spirit can bring everyone together, as some people can’t celebrate together physically. And you’ve heard it before as we’ve heard it a million times: “things look a little different this year.” Yes, things are different this year, but there’s always room for new traditions, new ways of celebrating, new ways of spreading Christmas cheer.

So, while we Zoom’ed our employee training, that interconnectedness of the holiday season was still there. We laughed at everyone’s ridiculous costumes, we sang Christmas carols (out of sync because – well – Zoom), and we engaged in some friendly festive competition (shout-out PG San Jose for hitting it out of the park with your holiday cheer).

From all of us at Purchase Green, we wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Happy New Year.

Introducing AirDrain: your landscaping drainage solution

Purchase Green recently added something special to our product line-up: AirDrain!

If you don’t already know, AirDrain is a subsurface landscaping drainage solution that works to collect and redirect water as it drains under the artificial grass. It has a 1-inch depth and a 92% air void!

That depth and air void allow air to circulate and water to pass through rapidly, which can be a contributor to helping keep turf cooler, preventing bacteria and odor buildup, as well as reinforce injury prevention by improving HIC and Gmax ratings.

Specifically, AirDrain can hold a half-gallon of water per square foot until it can evacuate to the exit drains, it only needs a .25% slope for effective drainage, and it drains at a rate of 171 inches per hour. That’s some quick drainage.

“So, AirDrain can drain pretty fast. Okay? When am I gonna use it?”

Great question!

AirDrain’s drainage performance is most meaningful for rooftop and pet applications. Since rooftops are nonpermeable surfaces, they need that water to flow off of and away from the building. Pet areas or dog kennels also need continuous movement to prevent substantial odor and bacteria buildup from pet waste.

Besides rooftops and pet applications, installations over hardscape might need some added drainage help. Even installations over an aggregate base like decomposed granite might benefit from an added drainage solution. If you’re unsure whether or not your landscaping project needs AirDrain, our expert team could definitely help you figure it out.

In addition to being a rockin’ drainage system, AirDrain also supports greater shock attenuation. For sport and playground applications, AirDrain achieves an 18.9% improvement for applications over a gravel subbase, and a 14.7% improvement for applications over a concrete subbase, using the ASTM F355 test method and safety requirements. That means decreasing the risk of injury and making those sport fields and playgrounds a little safer.

Another super cool thing about AirDrain is its durability. It can be reused multiple times and can withstand extreme heat and cold. For installation, AirDrain comes in 32″x32″x1″ sheets that weigh 3lbs each, making them easy to move around the project site.

For more info about AirDrain, check out the video below! And let us know if we can answer any questions you have. You can click that live chat bar on the side of the screen to talk to a real Purchase Green artificial grass expert, or contact us here. We’re always happy, helpful, and happy to help!

What’s so cool about Cool Yarn?

If you’ve looked through our product page on our website, you may have noticed that over a dozen of our grasses are marked with our Cool Yarn label. So, what? That grass can do sick kickflips and wears a leather jacket? Is that why it’s so cool?

Unfortunately, our artificial grass technology has not developed to the point where our grass can do cool skateboard tricks, but I’ll be bringing that up in our next company meeting. On the flip side, our artificial grass technology has made it possible for grass to be 10-20% cooler!

And that’s what we call Cool Yarn!

How warm artificial grass gets depends on the grass’s density and color. Darker, thicker grasses will get warmer than lighter, less dense grasses. It’s like wearing a black sweater vest in the sun versus wearing a white tank top. That white tank top is going to keep you a whole lot cooler than that sweater vest.

So, how do we make Cool Yarn grasses cool?

It all starts with the material. In order to keep those molecules in the grass from getting all excited in the heat, we introduce inhibitors into the grass’s pigment. These inhibitors help reflect the sun’s heat away from the grass blades instead of absorbing it.

Not only do our inhibitors make our grass cool, but the actual shape of the blade helps, too! Mini W-shaped and V-shaped blades are better at reflecting heat away than other blade shapes. The V-shape is found in our Vista line of grasses, and the mini W-shape is found in our Arizona line.

Vista Natural 65 featuring our Cool Yarn technology

The Coolest Grass You Know

Why is our Cool Yarn grass so cool? The inhibitors are like the cool skateboard tricks, kickflipping that UV radiation away from the grass. And the blade shape is the leather jacket, reflecting heat and keeping up appearances. Maybe one day I’ll be as cool as Cool Yarn.

Interested in purchasing a Cool Yarn grass for your yard? Check out our shop page. You’ll find a ton of cool Cool Yarn grasses to choose from. Don’t know which one to pick? Creating a Backyard Putting Green? Here’s what you’ll need.

Creating your own backyard putting green may seem like a dream. But turning it into a reality may be more feasible than you think.

There are three different kinds of putting green installations:

  1. Basic installation – This putting green is being installed next to a hard concrete edge.
  2. Basic installation with fringe – This putting green is installed next to a hard concrete edge with fringe.
  3. Premium installation – This putting green is being installed next to a hard concrete edge using a bend-a-board.

Here’s a quick step-by-step breakdown of each type of backyard putting green installation.

Basic Backyard Putting Green

  1. Excavate 3-5 inches of the native soil; an optional weed barrier may be laid down on top of the excavated area.
  2. Fill in 4 inches with a crushed rock base, compacted to 90%-95% compaction, leaving 1 inch before reaching the height of the concrete edge. Lay 1/4 inch of decomposed granite on top of the crushed rock base and make sure to compact this evenly.
  3. Around the outer perimeter, attach seam tape to the sub-base with 5 inch, non-galvanized nails every foot.
  4. Glue the putting green onto the seam tape and secure with 3 inch, non-galvanized nails every 3-6 inches around the perimeter and use 1 inch, non-galvanized staples every 3 square feet in the interior.
  5. Now that the grass is laid out flat and attached, evenly spread .5 – 1.5 pound(s) of infill per square foot, raking it into the thatch of the turf.

Basic Backyard Putting Green with Fringe

  1. Excavate 3-5 inches of the native soil; an optional weed barrier may be laid down on top of the excavated area.
  2. Fill in 4 inches with a crushed rock base, compacted to 90%-95% compaction, leaving 1 inch before reaching the height of the concrete edge.
  3. Lay 1/4 inch of decomposed granite on top of the crushed rock base and make sure to compact this evenly.
  4. 4. Along the seam between the fringe and the putting green, attach seam tape to the sub-base with 5 inch non-galvanized nails every foot.
  5. Glue the putting green and fringe onto the seam tape and secure with 5 inch, non-galvanized nails on the fringe side of the seam and 1 inch, non-galvanized staples on the putting green side.
  6. Secure the fringe with 5 inch nails every 3-6 inches around the perimeter at approximately 1 inch away from the concrete edge as well as 1 inch staples every 3 square feet in the interior putting green.

Premium Backyard Putting Green

  1. Excavate 3-5 inches of the native soil; an optional weed barrier may be laid down on top of the excavated area.
  2. Fill in 2 inches with a crushed rock base, compacted to 90%-95% compaction, leaving about 3 inches before reaching the height of the concrete edge.
  3. Lay the bend-a- board around the entire perimeter. The bend-a- board is held in place with 12 inch composite stakes, five stakes per bend-a- board, held together by nailing or screwing the stake into the bend-a- board.
  4. Fill in all but 1/4 inch of the remaining area up to the top of the bend-a- board with crushed rock base.
  5. Lay 1/4 inch of decomposed granite on top of the crushed rock base and make sure to compact this evenly, this will be flush with the top of the bend-a- board.
  6. Around the outer perimeter, attach seam tape to the sub-base with 1 inch non-galvanized staples into the bend-a- board every foot.
  7. Glue the putting green onto the seam tape and secure with 1 inch, non-galvanized staples every 3-6 inches around the perimeter and every 3 square feet in the interior.
  8. Now that the grass is laid out flat and attached, evenly spread .5 – 1.5 pound(s) of infill per square foot, raking it into the thatch of the turf.
