Creating a Backyard Putting Green? Here’s what you’ll need.

Creating your own backyard putting green may seem like a dream. But turning it into a reality may be more feasible than you think.

There are three different kinds of putting green installations:

  1. Basic installation – This putting green is being installed next to a hard concrete edge.
  2. Basic installation with fringe – This putting green is installed next to a hard concrete edge with fringe.
  3. Premium installation – This putting green is being installed next to a hard concrete edge using a bend-a-board.

Here’s a quick step-by-step breakdown of each type of backyard putting green installation.

Basic Backyard Putting Green

  1. Excavate 3-5 inches of the native soil; an optional weed barrier may be laid down on top of the excavated area.
  2. Fill in 4 inches with a crushed rock base, compacted to 90%-95% compaction, leaving 1 inch before reaching the height of the concrete edge. Lay 1/4 inch of decomposed granite on top of the crushed rock base and make sure to compact this evenly.
  3. Around the outer perimeter, attach seam tape to the sub-base with 5 inch, non-galvanized nails every foot.
  4. Glue the putting green onto the seam tape and secure with 3 inch, non-galvanized nails every 3-6 inches around the perimeter and use 1 inch, non-galvanized staples every 3 square feet in the interior.
  5. Now that the grass is laid out flat and attached, evenly spread .5 – 1.5 pound(s) of infill per square foot, raking it into the thatch of the turf.

Basic Backyard Putting Green with Fringe

  1. Excavate 3-5 inches of the native soil; an optional weed barrier may be laid down on top of the excavated area.
  2. Fill in 4 inches with a crushed rock base, compacted to 90%-95% compaction, leaving 1 inch before reaching the height of the concrete edge.
  3. Lay 1/4 inch of decomposed granite on top of the crushed rock base and make sure to compact this evenly.
  4. 4. Along the seam between the fringe and the putting green, attach seam tape to the sub-base with 5 inch non-galvanized nails every foot.
  5. Glue the putting green and fringe onto the seam tape and secure with 5 inch, non-galvanized nails on the fringe side of the seam and 1 inch, non-galvanized staples on the putting green side.
  6. Secure the fringe with 5 inch nails every 3-6 inches around the perimeter at approximately 1 inch away from the concrete edge as well as 1 inch staples every 3 square feet in the interior putting green.

Premium Backyard Putting Green

  1. Excavate 3-5 inches of the native soil; an optional weed barrier may be laid down on top of the excavated area.
  2. Fill in 2 inches with a crushed rock base, compacted to 90%-95% compaction, leaving about 3 inches before reaching the height of the concrete edge.
  3. Lay the bend-a- board around the entire perimeter. The bend-a- board is held in place with 12 inch composite stakes, five stakes per bend-a- board, held together by nailing or screwing the stake into the bend-a- board.
  4. Fill in all but 1/4 inch of the remaining area up to the top of the bend-a- board with crushed rock base.
  5. Lay 1/4 inch of decomposed granite on top of the crushed rock base and make sure to compact this evenly, this will be flush with the top of the bend-a- board.
  6. Around the outer perimeter, attach seam tape to the sub-base with 1 inch non-galvanized staples into the bend-a- board every foot.
  7. Glue the putting green onto the seam tape and secure with 1 inch, non-galvanized staples every 3-6 inches around the perimeter and every 3 square feet in the interior.
  8. Now that the grass is laid out flat and attached, evenly spread .5 – 1.5 pound(s) of infill per square foot, raking it into the thatch of the turf.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Last year, we posted a Thanksgiving blog saying what we’re thankful for. It’s crazy how much the world has changed since then. Even though things look a lot different in 2020, we are no less grateful than we were last year.

So, in the midst of all the uncertainty, we just want to take a moment and recount what we’re thankful for. Hopefully, this day can remind us that not everything is doom and gloom.

Our Purchase Green Team

We are so thankful for the amazing team we have here at Purchase Green. From navigating this pandemic to providing the best possible customer experience, they’re the best of the best. Every facet of our company–stores, warehouses, dealers, corporate offices, contractors–all work collaboratively to tackle challenges, expand the brand, and continuously improve. Thank you, PG Team!

In addition to the Purchase Green team, we want to thank the Controlled Products team for working with us and providing insight and support.

Our Growth

Even in the midst of a pandemic, our company is growing, and we could not be more thankful for that! This year, we opened a second Colorado location in Castle Rock and created our Sales and Service Support Center in San Dimas to shape an even better customer experience. In the next few months, we plan on opening at least four more stores across the U.S., so stay tuned for those official announcements.

Our Customers

And, of course, we couldn’t do what we do without people supporting us and believing in our products. We are passionate about what we do here at Purchase Green, and we sell only the best products. Our team members hear this a lot, but our grass sells itself. We aren’t in the game of making big sales in spite of what a customer may want, but we are here to help provide the information, material, and service of creating a beautiful, edifying landscape. So thank you to all of our customers for letting us do exactly that.

Whatever the holiday looks like for you this year, we wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

Artificial Grass Shorts ON SALE

A short is a roll of artificial grass that is (you guessed it!) shorter than when it left the factory. This happens when a customer orders a certain amount of artificial grass and what’s left on the roll we sell as a short. Shorts are just like regular rolls of artificial grass, only shorter.

And today we wanted to let you all know that two of our stores are having a sale! That’s right, Purchase Green Denver and Purchase Green Palm Desert are having an End of Season, End of Roll sale. With artificial grass shorts on sale, that means that multiple grasses are available at a discount. So if you’re in those areas, you’re in luck!

For our Denver store, available grasses include Putting Green, AZ Platinum Olive, AZ Pro, Bluegrass Light, Diamond Cool 50, Southwestern Sod, Field Spring, Fescue Supreme, Vista Sport, and Spring Pet Pro. You can get savings of $0.40 /sq.ft. for available grasses.

At PG Palm Desert, you can get savings of $0.50 /sq.ft. on their available grasses.

To get in on the savings, call the store and pick up the artificial grass you’ve been waiting for.

Artificial Grass Do’s and Don’ts

We get a lot of questions about how artificial grass should be treated. So we’ve compiled a list of things that you definitely should and should not do with your artificial grass. Concise and convenient, just for you.

DON’T

  • Leave or use plastic pools on the grass
  • Cover grass with tarps
  • Use barbeques or grills on your grass
  • Use firepits on your grass
  • Leave metal tools on your grass
  • Place recently used power tools or tools with engines on your grass
  • Place glass tables on your grass
  • Place hot pans or dishes on your grass
  • Use metal rakes on your grass
  • Set off fireworks on your grass

DO

  • Check for highly reflective surfaces, including metal flashing and Low-E windows, before you install your grass. Such surfaces can bounce intense heat back onto your grass and can cause localized melting.
  • Give your grass a quick rinse at least once a month to take care of smaller debris and dust
  • Use a flexible lawn rake to clean larger debris off of your grass
  • Give your grass periodic deep cleaning to reduce bacteria and odor build-up on your grass. We recommend using Turf Bomb to sanitize and target odors.
  • Enjoy your artificial grass!

Following these quick and easy do’s and don’ts will keep your grass from getting damaged and will have it lasting for years to come.

If you have questions about why you should or shouldn’t do these things, feel free to reach out to one of our artificial grass experts! We’re always happy to help!

Low, Medium, or High Traffic: Artificial grass traffic explained

When choosing the right artificial grass, we often ask how much traffic the area will get. But what does this mean exactly? Where are the lines drawn?

Today, we’re breaking down what exactly low, medium, and high traffic entails for your artificial grass and giving you some examples of grasses for each level.

Low Traffic

Low-traffic grasses are those that are intended to be installed largely for aesthetic purposes. These grasses can be walked on but, in general, any activity more substantial than walking should be avoided.

An important note is that while you could, in theory, install any grass for any application, we do not recommend certain grasses for certain applications. For example, we obviously wouldn’t recommend a low-traffic, aesthetic grass for a football field. The grass wouldn’t last as long or perform as well as a grass designed specifically for sport applications. All of our grasses are of high quality, but some are more suited to certain applications.

If you’re looking at getting artificial grass for a yard that people will look at rather than play on, Zoysia, Bluegrass Light, and Spring Rye 65 are beautiful options.

Medium Traffic

Medium-traffic grasses represent the majority of the grasses we sell. These are grasses designed for everyday use.

Many lawn applications will require at least medium traffic grasses for kids and pets to play.

Some great medium traffic options are Eco Olive 80, Vista Natural 65, and Nature’s Sod Plush.

High Traffic

High-traffic grasses can stand up to just about anything – dogs, kids, sports, and playground activities. If you’re looking for the heaviest duty grasses for sport fields, playgrounds, pet areas, and the like, here are some of our high-traffic grasses that can do the job well: Vista Natural 80, Vista Sport, and Arizona Platinum. You can also browse our selection of playground turfs and sport turfs.

We hope that helped you understand how important traffic is when deciding on artificial grass. If you have any questions about your project’s traffic level, reach out to your local Purchase Green or contact us here. We’re happy to help!

Happy Veterans Day!

From all of us at Purchase Green, we want to give a huge, heartfelt thank you to all who have served in the armed forces. We owe so much to the men and women who have made sacrifices for our country. So not just today, but every day, we are so grateful for military service personnel and the families who support them.

We’re Having a Clearance Sale on Artificial Grass!

You heard it right, folks! It’s sale time! If you’ve been looking for a time to buy some of our artificial grass, perhaps the time is now.

Here’s a breakdown of all the grasses that are on sale right now:

Vista 70: 20% discount!

Vista 70 is an exceptional balance of aesthetics & performance – an excellent, thick & full, very natural-looking product specifically designed aesthetically for climates that receive more rainfall or for the customer who likes a lush, dark green look. The Vista 70 is designed for the customer that wants an exceptionally natural look and is purchasing it for its durability over its texture.

$2.65 $2.12 / sq.ft.

Nature’s Sod 90: 10% discount!

Nature’s Sod 90 provides the aesthetic of the Premier but at a lower cost. This is designed for the customer that wants the appearance of a very full, thick premium fiber but at a lower cost because the intended use is for a light to medium traffic application. It is an olive bi-color grass with olive green and brown thatch to provide a very realistic look.

$2.99 $2.69 / sq.ft.

Marathon – Olive: 20% discount!

Marathon Olive has a “U” shaped fiber and the polymer additives, similar to our Vista fiber, that helps to reduce the surface temperature of the synthetic lawn grass by diverting UV rays from the shorter curled fibers where heat can be trapped resulting in 10% to 20% temperature improvements relative to grasses with the highest heat-retention rate.

Marathon Olive is an excellent, high quality, light to medium traffic artificial lawn product. It is designed for the customer that wants a durable, natural-looking artificial grass lawn that emphasizes temperature-controlled fibers.

$2.99 $2.39 / sq.ft.

Field Spring: 10% discount!

Field Spring blends the Mini Wave temperature-controlled fiber from our AZ Platinum Spring with a tan rectangular fiber to deliver a superior, natural color blend and texture. It is a durable, delustered, temperature-controlled artificial grass. The shape allows for the durability of a W shaped fiber but with a different aesthetic – more similar in appearance to a winter rye than a fescue. The mini-w also has reduced surface area resulting in a no-shine finish.

$2.75 $2.48 / sq.ft.

Spring Fescue Pet Pro: 20% discount!

Spring Fescue Pet Pro represents the leading-edge of artificial grass technology. It combines the best of all components; delivering industry-leading tuft bind, drainage rates, fiber durability, and temperature performance. It uses PG Cool Yarn technology offering improved temperature performance. It is produced with a fully permeable PET (PolyLock, Encore & Total Surface Drainage) backing system.

Spring Fescue Pet Pro is one of the only grasses on the market that comes with Purchase Green’s 360 rating. The 360 rating means that grass is an all-around exceptional product.

$2.55 $2.04 / sq.ft.

Spring Fescue Premier: 20% discount!

Spring Fescue Premier is made with a premium Wave-shaped fiber – offering the performance of the Vista with texture improvements (i.e. it is not as stiff!). This fiber has outstanding memory and, with the proper amount of artificial grass infill to suit your expected foot traffic, it is a highly durable artificial lawn. The grass is made with a delustered, monofilament tall fiber in a spring bicolor (a field green & apple green color blend). Spring Fescue comes with a green and brown thatch. It also comes with PG’s 360 rating.

$2.99 $2.39 / sq.ft.

Browse our shop to see if any of those products suit your project! If you’re not sure what would work best for you, feel free to reach out to your local Purchase Green store or contact us! We’d be happy to help you find what you’re looking for.
