As you browse through the products section you may notice some grasses come with our Cool Yarn label. So what’s a cool yarn?
Cool yarn is the term we use to describe a select number of our grasses that have been engineered such that they remain cooler than other varieties of artificial grass.
Making cool yarn grasses begins with the materials used to manufacture artificial grass, the most common of which are polyethylene, polypropylene and nylon. These fibers, when exposed to sunlight, react like everything else – the molecules are excited and heat is produced.
Part of the process of creating cool yarn grasses is introducing inhibitors into the pigment used to give the grass its natural-looking color. These inhibitors help to reflect heat away from the individual blades of grass rather than absorb it.
Specifically, we design our cool yarn grasses to divert UV radiation from the shorter curled fibers where heat can be trapped. In many cases Cool Yarn grasses are capable of producing temperature improvements of 10-20% relative to grasses with the highest heat retention rate.
But adding inhibitors is only half of the story. The other attribute of a cool yarn is the shape of the blade. Our Vista and Eco lines, for example, feature a V-shaped and a C-shaped blade, respectively. These shapes are better at reflecting heat away, helping reduce the overall temperature of your artificial grass lawn.
You’ll notice that our V-shaped blades produce a grass that isn’t quite as soft as some others. Blade shapes that are good at reducing temperature mean you’re trading a softer texture for a grass that is cooler and can stand up to heavier traffic.
