Basic Installation Method Sports Turf

This sports turf is being installed next to a hard concrete edge.

  1. Excavate 3-5 inches of the native soil; an optional weed barrier may be laid down on top of the excavated area.
  2. Fill in 3-4 inches with a crushed rock base, compacted to 90%-95% compaction, leaving 3/4 inch before reaching the height of the concrete edge.
  3. Lay 1/4 inch of decomposed granite on top of the crushed rock base and make sure to compact this evenly.
  4. Now it’s time to roll out and install your grass. If there are any seams, be sure to use seam tape and glue to attach the two pieces, and secure into place with 5 inch non-galvanized nails every 6 inches on both sides (staggered by 3 inches on either side) of the seam. Secure the turf by using 5 inch non-galvanized nails every 3-6 inches around the perimeter, about 1/2 inch away from the hard concrete edge, as well as every 3 square feet within the interior.
  5. Spread out the infill and rake it into the grass. The amount of infill for Sports Field installations is 2 pounds of crumb rubber and 2.5 pounds of Mellowfill per square foot.

Basic Installation Method Sports Turf with Shock Pad

This grass is being installed next to a hard concrete edge using a bend-a-board.

  1. Excavate 3-5 inches of the native soil; an optional weed barrier may be laid down on top of the excavated area.
  2. Fill in about 3.5 inches with a crushed rock base, compacted to 90%-95% compaction, leaving 1 1/4 inches before reaching the height of the concrete edge.
  3. Lay 1/4 inch of decomposed granite on top of the crushed rock base and make sure to compact this evenly.
  4. Lay down the shock pad on top of the sub-base, you should have about 1/2 inch before reaching the height of the hard concrete outer edge.
  6. Spread out the infill and rake it into the grass. The amount of infill for Sports Field installations is 2 pounds of crumb rubber and 2.5 pounds of Mellowfill per square foott.

Premium Installation Method Sports Turf

This sports turf is being installed next to a hard concrete edge using a bend-a-board.

  1. Excavate 3-5 inches of the native soil; an optional weed barrier may be laid down on top of the excavated area.
  2. Fill in 2 inches with a crushed rock base, compacted to 90%-95% compaction, leaving 2.5 inches before reaching the height of the concrete edge.
  3. Lay the bend-a-board around the entire perimeter, leaving about 1/4 inch between your concrete edge and the bend-a-board itself, and about 1/2 inch before reaching the height of the outer perimeter. The bend-a-board is held in place with 12 inch composite stakes, five stakes per bend-a-board, held together by nailing the stake into the bend-a-board.
  4. After the bend-a-board is in place, continue to evenly lay out the crushed rock base within the bend-a-board perimeter, leaving 1/4 inch before reaching the top of the bend-a-board, compacting this down as you go.
  5. Use about 1/4 inch of decomposed granite to level the area, be sure to compact this evenly. Your sub-base and the bend-a-board should now be flush, about 1/2 inch below the hard concrete edge.
  6. Now it’s time to roll out and install your grass. If your installation requires seaming, be sure to use seam tape and glue to attach the two pieces. Secure the seam into place with 5 inch, non-galvanized nails every 6 inches on both sides (staggered by 3 inches on either side) of the seam. Secure the turf by using 5 inch, non-galvanized nails every 3-6 inches around the perimeter, about 1/2 inch away from the hard concrete edge, as well as every 3 square feet within the interior.
  7. Spread out the infill and rake it into the grass. The amount of infill for Sports Field installations is 2 pounds of crumb rubber and 2.5 pounds of Mellowfill per square foot.

Premium Installation Method Sports Turf with Shock Pad

This sports turf is being installed next to a concrete hard edge using bend-a-board and shock pad.

  1. Excavate 3-5 inches of the native soil; an optional weed barrier may be laid down on top of the excavated area.
  2. Lay down about 1.5 inches of your crushed rock sub-base and compact it lightly.
  3. Lay the bend-a-board around the entire perimeter, leaving about 1/4 inch between your concrete edge and the bend-a-board itself and about 1/2 inch before reaching the height of the outer perimeter. The bend-a-board is held in place with 12 inch composite stakes, five stakes per bend-a-board, held together by nailing the stake into the bend-a-board.
  4. Continue to evenly lay out the crushed rock base within the bend-a-board perimeter, leaving 3/4 inch before reaching the top of the bend-a-board, compacting this down as you go.
  5. Use about 1/4 inch of decomposed granite to level the area. Be sure to compact this evenly, and then lay the shock pad flush with the bend-a-board. The bend-a-board and shock pad should both be about 1/2 inch lower than the concrete edging to leave room for the grass itself.
  6. Now it’s time to roll out and install your grass. If there are any seams, be sure to use seam tape and glue to attach the two pieces, and secure into place with 5 inch non-galvanized nails every 6 inches on both sides (staggered by 3 inches on either side) of the seam. Secure the grass with a minimum of 1 inch non-galvanized staples every 3-6 inches around the perimeter and with 5 inch non-galvanized nails every 2-3 inches in the interior.
  7. After the turf has been nailed down, tuck the outer edge into the 1/4 inch gap we left between the concrete edging and the bend-a-board.
  8. Spread out the infill and rake it into the grass. The amount of infill for Sports Field installations is 2 pounds of crumb rubber and 2.5 pounds of Mellowfill per square foot.
