S-Shape

One of the most important aspects of any variety of artificial grass is best appreciated close up. Like really, REALLY close up. At Purchase Green we design our grasses using seven different yarn types, each offering a unique shape and set of attributes. The shape of the grass blade is related to how the grass looks, feels and performs. This section is designed to help you learn about the benefits offered each of our yarn types.

The S-Shape fiber helps split our Nature’s Sod line. This particular fiber is the result of a very scientific approach to balancing the realistic look of the yarns and the performance of the yarns. Known for its exceptionally soft feel, great performance, and virtually no shine, the S-shape fiber is very popular all over the world. As is the case with stem grasses, not all S-shapes are alike. Purchase Green’s S-fiber is unique in two regards. First, our S fiber has virtually zero shine whatsoever because it receives an anti-luster treatment at the factory prior to being tufted. Second, our S fiber is softer than the competition. We achieved this by improving the denier. A thicker blade means better performance. In fact, the only thing left in common between our S and the competitions is the shape.

The reasoning behind the design of the S fiber is similar to that of the Vista. Imagine taking that piece of paper again and trying to stand it up on its side. Even if supported by some base, the paper will fold over because it’s too skinny to support its own weight. When you shape that paper into an S, however, you’ll find it stands up quite fine on its own.

More than just add support, the S-shape reduces the shine of artificial grass by distorting the surface area available to direct sunlight at any given point in time, the S-Shape helps reduce shine while providing a well performing architecture to support the blade. Customers choose S-fibers for a variety of reasons:

Color: This is perhaps one of the biggest reasons Purchase Green’s S fibers are better than the competition. While most S fibers available have more of a dull murky brown green to them, ours has a more vibrant and lively green. Mixed with the olive bi-color notes, the brown thatch helps with lightening things up. There are some tiny hints of emerald that come through with a lack of sunlight, too, so it’s a pretty diverse pallet for this grass.

Design: The look of the S fiber is pretty unique; carrying notes of Buffalo and St. Augustine.

Performance: Both products we develop in the S-grass are on the opposite ends of the mid-traffic spectrum. The yarn itself is a top performer, probably third place among the top four performers (Thiolon, Vista, S-Grass, Diamond). But performance is a function of face-weight and yarn type, so our S-grasses, while top performing yarns, are produced for mid-traffic purposes because we want to offer beautiful and realistic looking grasses in every category.
