Unsettling news is coming in from East Porterville, California, where some families have lost access to running water due to the severe drought conditions afflicting the Golden State. Residents in East Porterville that rely on water from underground wells are now resorting to using donated bottled water for drinking and cooking, and gathering water from large tanks in their yards for bathing and cleaning.
This news, coupled with the string of wildfires that have hit California this year, is opening many peoples’ eyes to the fact that just turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth and taking shorter showers is not going to be enough to get California through this drought. It’s going to take a concerted effort by homeowners and business owners to reduce water consumption at a larger scale, and the easiest place to start is by reducing, or stopping altogether, the watering of lawns and outdoor landscapes.
